A local community in the Sekhukhune District of Limpopo is reeling after a violent dispute over money ended in a senseless loss of life. On Wednesday, the Motetema South African police Service(SAPS) apprehended a 24-year-old male suspect in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred at a tavern in Tafelkop Village.
A deadly dispute over money
The incident unfolded during the midday hours when an argument reportedly broke out between the suspect and a companion. According to preliminary investigations, the confrontation centered on money, which the suspect allegedly took from the individually by force. The situation escalated rapidly when the suspect produced a sharp object he had been carrying and stabbed a 47-year-old man once in the chest.
Emergency response and discovery
Witnesses at the scene directed responding police officers to the victim, who was found lying on a dilapidated car seat in the shade. Despite the immediate response of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the victim was tragically certified dead at the scene due to the severity of the chest wound.
Swift police intervention and arrest
Following the attack, the suspect fled the area on foot, prompting an immediate manhunt by local authorities. A murder case was swiftly opened, and through diligent tracing efforts, SAPS members located the suspect at a hideout within Tafelkop Village just a few hours after the crime was reported.
Legal proceedings and remand
The 24-year-old remains in custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance before the Motetema Magistrate Court on Friday, 22 May 2026. He faces a formal charge of murder as the community mourns the victim and reflects on the devastating consequences of the afternoon's violence.
