South Africa's Bafana Bafana produced a memorable performance on Sunday night, defeating Egypt 1-0 in an international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium. The result completed a perfect international window under coach Pitso Mosimane.
Puso Dithejane scored the only goal of the match in the 51st minute on his senior international debut. He capitalised on a goalkeeping error to secure a famous away win against the highly rated Pharaohs. The victory made it three wins from three matches for Mosimane since his return to the Bafana Bafana hot seat, following earlier successes over Guinea and a emphatic 5-0 thrashing of Eritrea in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
Bold selection gamble pays off
Mosimane took a bold approach by making nine changes from the side that dismantled Eritrea. Only centre-back Ime Okon and midfielder Sphephelo Sithole retained their starting places. The coach handed opportunities to several fringe and emerging players, including goalkeeper and captain Sipho Chaine, Fawaaz Basadien, Tashreeq Matthews and Dithejane himself.
Egypt, missing Mohamed Salah, started the brighter of the two sides. Omar Marmoush and others threatened early, but Bafana remained organised and restricted the hosts to limited clear-cut chances in the first half. South Africa's best moments before the break came through Thabang Matuludi, who fired wide and later saw a shot flash just over the bar.
Second-half breakthrough
The breakthrough arrived five minutes into the second half. Substitute Shandre Campbell, introduced at half-time, played a well-weighted long ball forward. Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir rushed off his line but was beaten to the ball by Dithejane. The Chicago Fire attacker showed excellent composure, rounding the challenge and slotting into an empty net for his first senior international goal.
Defensive resolve seals the win
Egypt pushed hard for an equaliser thereafter, dominating possession and creating several late opportunities. Substitute goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, who replaced Chaine, produced crucial saves – notably denying a header from young Barcelona forward Hamza Abdelkarim and another late effort that saw the rebound hit the woodwork. Bafana's defence, marshalled with discipline, held firm until the final whistle.
Significance beyond the scoreline
The victory carried extra significance as Mosimane returned to Cairo, a city where he previously enjoyed major success with Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was among those present at the stadium after visiting the Bafana camp earlier.
Bafana now head home with three wins, strong momentum and a growing pool of players who have impressed under Mosimane. The result underlines the progress of the national team as they continue building towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
