In a night that will go down as one of the most significant upsets in recent Nedbank Cup history, Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars eliminated Orlando Pirates from the competition on Saturday evening.

The dramatic Round of 16 encounter at the Orlando Amstel Arena ended 5-4 in favour of the visitors following a tense penalty shootout, after the two sides remained deadlocked at 0-0 following 120 minutes of grueling action.

A defensive masterclass

Orlando Pirates, entering the match as heavy favorites and looking to bounce back from a midweek league defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns, dominated the ball for large spells. However, they found themselves repeatedly frustrated by a disciplined Casric Stars defensive block and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Tshigwana Mthombeni.

The Buccaneers had their chances, including a 33rd-minute point-blank header from Andre de Jong and a 94th-minute effort from  Tshepang Moremi that rattled the crossbar. Despite throwing on attacking reinforcements in extra time,….. men could not find a way past the visitors' resilient rearguard.

The shootout drama

As the match drifted towards penalties, the tension in the stands was palpable. The shootout began with immediate heartbreak for the home side when veteran defender Nkosinathi Sibisi saw his opening penalty drift wide.

While both teams displayed composure under pressure, it was Casric Stars who ultimately held their nerve, converting their spot-kicks to secure a famous 5-4 victory and a historic place in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals.

What's next?

For Casric Stars, the result marks a monumental achievement in the club's history, as they advance to the last eight of South Africa's prestigious Nedbank Cup. Conversely, for Orlando Pirates, the loss is a difficult blow to their ambitions of securing a quadruple, leaving the side to refocus on their remaining domestic league challenges.
