The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have released a scathing statement following President Cyril Ramaphosa's appointment of Roelf Meyer as South Africa's ambassador to the United States.

The party rejected the move in the strongest possible terms, labeling the appointment “politically tone-deaf” and a “deliberate insult” to the history of the country.

A controversial legacy

The core of the EFF's objection lies in Meyer's prominent role within the apartheid-era government. The statement highlights his rise through the ranks of the National Party, serving as a Member of Parliament during the 1980s – a period marked by systemic exclusion and violent repression of Black South Africans.

The EFF specifically cited Meyer's previous high-ranking positions. As Deputy Minister of Law and Order, he was part of a department the EFF describes as the machinery that enforced apartheid laws and crushed political opposition. Later, as Minister of Defence, he oversaw the South African Defence Force (SADF), an entity the party notes was implicated in cross-border destabilisation and internal repression.

While Meyer is often recognised for his role in the 1990s transition to democracy, the EFF argues that these actions cannot be used to sanitize or erase his earlier role in upholding apartheid.

The shadow of Chris Hani

The timing of the appointment has further fueled the party's outrage. The statement notes that the decision comes as the nation commemorates the assassination of Chris Hani. The EFF invoked Hani's legacy, claiming the revolutionary leader had warned against romanticizing members of the apartheid regime who rebranded themselves as democrats.

“The EFF refuses to accept a situation where, in the shadow of Hani's martyrdom, the democratic state elevates former apartheid functionaries into positions of international representation.”

Geopolitical implications

The EFF also framed the appointment as a tactical error in the context of current global politics. They argue that as the United States grapples with its own internal struggles regarding racism and right-wing politics, South Africa should be projecting a bold, uncompromising anti-imperialist posture.

The party dismissed the government's narrative that Meyer's appointment offers experience or stability. Instead, the EFF accused the Ramaphosa administration of seeking to appease white power structures and the supremacist whims of Donald Trump by putting forward a figure they believe is more palatable to the West.

Call for withdrawal

The statement concludes with a demand for the immediate withdrawal of Meyer's appointment. The EFF is calling on the President to instead select a representative who embodies the true revolutionary values of South Africa.

As of now, the Presidency has not issued a formal rebuttal to the EFF's claims, but the appointment is certain to spark a heated national debate regarding the balance between reconciliation and historical accountability in South Africa's diplomatic corps.
