One of South Africa's most recognisable radio voices, Sipho “DJ Sgqemeza” Mbatha, has officially confirmed his departure from Ukhozi FM after the station opted not to renew his contract for the 2026/2027 financial year.

In a candid media statement titled “Setting the Record Straight,” Mbatha addressed the swirling rumours regarding his exit from the SABC's largest radio station, where he has been a cornerstone of the Vuka Afrika Breakfast Show.

“Embarrassing” metrics and internal friction

While Mbatha stated he respects the SABC's prerogative to refresh its lineup, he did not hold back regarding the “notable inconsistencies” in the communication of the decision. He specifically took aim at the performance metrics used by management to justify his exit, labeling them “deeply concerning” and “embarrassing.”

“I will refrain from detailing them, as it is frankly embarrassing that such considerations could be relied upon at management level,” Mbatha noted, suggesting a breakdown in the relationship between the veteran host and station leadership.

Correcting the “ministry” narrative

A key point of contention for Mbatha was the public narrative that he had requested to leave to focus on his religious ministry. Mbatha, who is a Reverend and has been increasingly vocal about his spiritual journey on platforms like Ukhozi FM TV, clarified that he did not initiate a request to be released.

Earlier reports in March 2026 had suggested he sought a move to an evening slot to accommodate his church duties in Jozini. However, Mbatha's statement clarifies that while he was offered an “alternative on-air offering” (likely a non-primetime slot), he declined it due to a lack of sustainability and poor structure.

A career built on connection

DJ Sgqemeza's departure marks the end of a long-standing relationship with the SABC that spanned news, radio dramas, and several flagship shows, including the Vuka Afrika Breakfast Show, Kusazoba Mnandi, Woza Nabangani Bakho (Afternoon Drive), and Weekend Breakfast.

A legacy of highs and lows

Mbatha's tenure was not without its headlines. In 2021, he was famously served with court summons at the SABC studios over a R4 million payment error from the Department of Arts and Culture. In 2022, he also faced a brief “unscheduling” (suspension) alongside his production team during an internal investigation.

Despite these hurdles, his popularity remained immense, with listeners recently noting his absence from the station's 2026 annual calendar as a sign of his impending exit.

What's next?

Mbatha concluded his statement by thanking his loyal advertisers and the millions of listeners who followed him from community radio to the national stage. He remains “available, committed, and open to future opportunities,” signaling that while his chapter at Ukhozi FM has closed, his voice likely won't be silent for long.
