Finland has been officially declared as the 31st member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO) and its flag was raised at the NATO headquarters for the first time on Tuesday,04 April 2023.

The admission of Finland was announced during the commemoration of 74 years NATO was founded on that day in April 1949 by the alliance's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the headquarters of NATO in Brussels,Belgium.

NATO is one of the strongest military alliance exist in the modern age and it becomes more stronger and stronger every year as more countries want to join it especially in Eastern Europe.

Finland's admission to the alliance brings NATO forces more closer to the Russian borders and that might angers Russian government because is against the expansion plans of NATO in that region.

The NATO's decision to fast track the admission of Finland to the alliance was motivated by the Russian occupation of Ukraine territories since February 2022,the Russian invasion has left millions of Ukrainians homeless, thousands dead and infrastructure destroyed.

The Alliance's Secretary General was seemed to be excited to announce Finland as a new member and maintained that would strengthen security of the Nordic region.

"This is an historic. Tomorrow, we will welcome Finland as the thirty-first member of NATO. Making Finland safer and our Alliance stronger .We will raise the Finnish flag for the first time here at the NATO Headquarters. It will be a good day for Finland's security ,for Nordic security and for NATO as a whole," Jens Stoltenberg said.

The Finland's neighbour Sweden also applied to join the NATO and if will be accepted would become thirty-second member of the Alliance but its chances to succeed are very low as Turkey is blocking its application because accuse Sweden to harbouring Turkey's enemies and encouraging anti-Turkish demonstrations to take place in the country.

Today, it is second day of meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs at Brussels.

NATO has been involved in military operations in the Balkans, Middle East, South Asia and Africa, but its involvement in Africa has collapsed peaceful countries such as Libya after NATO helped rebels to kill Muammar Gaddafi a decade ago.
