The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that four suspects are now in custody in connection with the murder of boxer Zolani Tete, who was fatally shot at NU 17,Mdantsane, on 21 August 2026.
Arrest timeline and details
According to an official SAPS update, two additional suspects were apprehended, bringing the total number in custody to four. The first arrest took place on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at KuGompo City. A further three arrests were made on Sunday, 23 August 2026 – one in Mdantsane and two in Scenery Park. The three suspects arrested on Sunday are aged 27,27 and 28 respectively.
Police also corrected an earlier error regarding the age of one of the suspects arrested on 23 August, confirming the correct age as 27 and not 22 as previously reported.
Court appearance and charges
The 22-year-old suspect arrested on 22 August has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder. He is scheduled to appear before the Mdantsane Magistrate's Court on 24 August 2026. The other three suspects are expected to appear in court soon. The attempted murder charge relates to a 27-year-old female passenger who was wounded in the attack and remains hospitalised.
Witness status and ongoing investigation
A 30-year-old man who was initially apprehended on 22 August has been released and is regarded as a potential witness.
SAPS indicated that more arrests are expected as the investigation continues, with detectives following up on leads. Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing probe, police said they are unable to disclose further details at this stage. The public and media have been cautioned against speculation or the dissemination of unverified information, as this could compromise the investigation and the integrity of court proceedings.
