A high-speed chase and a violent confrontation in Bellair on Monday afternoon, March 23,2026, resulted in the deaths of four suspects linked to a reign of terror across several KwaZulu-Natal communities.
The pursuit and hideout confrontation
The incident began when Crime Intelligence officers spotted the suspects in the Bellair vicinity. According to SAPS, the suspects refused to comply with orders to stop, leading to a high-speed vehicle chase.
The pursuit concluded at a residential property that the group had been using as a hideout. Upon reaching the house, the suspects opened fire on law enforcement, initiating a fierce shootout. While four suspects were fatally wounded in the exchange, police confirmed that one individual managed to narrowly evade arrest and remains at large. A massive manhunt has been launched to locate the fugitive.
A “String of Serious Crimes”
The SAPS statement revealed that the group was not only wanted for recent robberies but was also linked to a series of violent offences that had tormented residents in Mbumbulu, KwaMakhutha, Ntuzuma, and Folweni.
The suspects were being sought for a laundry list of serious charges, including:
- Murder and Attempted Murder (including prior attacks on police officers)
- Car and Truck Jacking
- Business and House Robberies
Recovery of weapons
Following the shootout, police processed the scene and recovered four firearms in the possession of the deceased suspects. These weapons will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they were used in other crimes across the province.
The Provincial Commissioner's office confirmed that despite the intensity of the gunfire at the hideout, no police officers were injured during the operation.
Ongoing investigation
The SAPS continues to operationalise intelligence to clamp down on the remaining members of the syndicate. Residents in the Bellair and surrounding areas have been urged to remain vigilant as the search for the fifth suspect continues.
