Gauteng police have arrested ten suspects, aged between 30 and 54, and recovered nine firearms following a shootout with officers in Cleveland on Monday evening, 21 September 2026. The incident took place at approximately 19:36.

How the chase unfolded

Police members were conducting routine patrols in the area when they noticed a suspicious Hyundai H100 bakkie fitted with blue lights and a siren. The vehicle initially stopped as officers approached but then sped off when members attempted to intercept it.

Police called for backup and continued following the suspicious vehicle.

Shootout and fatal shooting

When the vehicle eventually stopped, three suspects illegally jumped out and opened fire at the police. A shootout ensued between the police and the suspects. Two suspects fled the scene on foot, while a third suspect was fatally shot.

Arrests and recovery of firearms

Police subsequently searched the vehicle and found ten suspects inside. Nine firearms, magazines and live ammunition were recovered.

Charges and court appearance

Cleveland police have opened cases of murder, attempted murder, attempted business robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. 

The arrested suspects are expected to appear before court soon. Police investigations are ongoing.
