Former President Jacob Zuma was involved a car accident while was on his way from Nkandla to Eshowe in KwaZulu-Natal to campaign for the uMkhonto we Sizwe Party(MK Party) on Thursday evening.
According to South African Police Service(SAPS) statement, police have arrested a 51-year-old man for drunken driving as well as on a charge of reckless and negligent driving. The man's motor vehicle collided with former President,Mr Jacob Zuma's official armoured state vehicle.
Police has confirmed that at the time of the collision, former President Zuma was in the vehicle with his protectors.
Police added that no one was injured including members of the Presidential Protection Services(PPS).The former President was evacuated and taken to his residence.
The accident happened on the R66 around 18:40,the suspect was arrested and expected to appear before the Eshowe Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
The MK Party is suspecting a foul play for that road crash although the police maintained that the suspect was under influence of alcohol which might contributed to him lose control.
Zuma will not go to parliament after elections
The Independent Electoral Commission(IEC) has confirmed that former President Jacob Zuma is not eligible to be shortlisted for a list of candidates that will go to parliament after 29 May 2024 elections.
In 2021,Zuma was convicted of being in contempt of court and handed a 15-month sentence for his refusal to testify before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.
That conviction automatically disqualifies him to contest any elections up until his sentence is over and that can five years to happen.
However,MK Party has promised to appeal the IEC's decision to remove Jacob Zuma from its parliamentary list.
Why Zuma campaigns for MK Party
Zuma announced late last year that he will not campaign for his political party African National Congress(ANC) for the incoming elections because he felt like an outsider since Cyril Ramaphosa took over as the President of the Party.
So,Zuma endorsed a newly-formed political party called uMkhonto we Sizwe(MK) Party and made it clear that he will campaign for it and he also urged his supporters to vote MK Party instead of ANC.
Zuma has been calling Ramaphosa a snake and sellout and someone who is against radical economic transformation(RET) which is supposed to benefit the black people who have been marginalised for years.
