In a significant victory for law enforcement in KwaZulu-Natal, the Mtubatuba Regional Court has handed down heavy sentences to three men responsible for a violent crime spree that claimed the life of a 47-year-old security guard.
The sentencing, which took place this week, marks a major milestone for the Emanguzi Cross Border Task Team, a specialised national intervention unit established to combat the rising tide of crime along the northern border of KZN.
The crimes: A trail of violence
The court heard harrowing details of the trio's activities, which dated back to late 2022:
- The Murder: On November 22, 2022, Mario Sithole (33), Zakhele Khathwayo (31), and Sikhumbuzo Hadebe (20) shot and killed a security guard in Emanguzi. After the cold-blooded killing, the attackers fled the scene with the victim's firearm.
- Aggravated Robbery: The group was also linked to a brutal house robbery where victims were tied up with cable ties at gunpoint. The trio managed to flee that scene with approximately R100,000 in cash.
The hammer of justice
The Mtubatuba Regional Court showed no leniency to the defendants, sentencing each of the three men to:
- Life imprisonment for the charge of murder.
- An additional 30 years' imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The successful prosecution was aided by the fact that the accused remained in custody throughout the trial. A fourth suspect eventually turned state witness, providing the crucial evidence needed to secure these convictions.
A regional crackdown on cross-border crime
The South African Police Service (SAPS) highlighted that these convictions are part of a broader, intensive effort to secure the northern border. The Emanguzi Task Team – comprising crime intelligence, detectives, and both proactive and reactive policing units — has been highly active in the region.
In the past three months alone, the team has recorded significant successes:
- 17 suspects arrested for various offences.
- 7 illegal firearms seized.
- 16 vehicles recovered.
The SAPS statement emphasises that this national intervention is specifically designed to tackle high-priority crimes such as hijacking, theft, and cross-border smuggling, ensuring that those who terrorise these communities are brought to book.
“The successful arrest and conviction of the accused is the result of the dedication and commitment of the national task team deployed in Emanguzi to prevent and combat cross border crimes north of KwaZulu-Natal.” — SAPS statement.
