In a result that shook the Premier League standings, Leeds United secured their first league win at the “Theatre of Dreams” in over four decades, defeating Manchester United 2-1 on Monday night.
A clinical first-half brace from Noah Okafor and a controversial red card for Lisandro Martinez condemned Michael Carrick's side to a rare and costly home defeat.
Okafor's clinical double
Leeds, battling to distance themselves from the relegation zone, wasted no time asserting their intent. Within just five minutes, Okafor capitalised on a rare defensive lapse to slot home the opener after a deep, precision cross from Jayden Bogle.
The visitors' dominance continued throughout the first half-hour as the Manchester United midfield struggled to find its rhythm. In the 29th minute, Okafor struck again, firing a first-time effort from the edge of the box that took a slight deflection before nestling into the far corner.
The early two-goal cushion left the Old Trafford faithful stunned as the hosts headed into the tunnel trailing by two.
Midweek drama and the Martinez red card
The mountain became significantly steeper for the hosts early in the second half. Following a VAR intervention in the 56th minute, defender Lisandro Martinez was shown a straight red card for violent conduct. The official adjudged Martinez to have engaged in an altercation with striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, leaving Manchester United to play the final thirty minutes with ten men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the “Red Devils” found their spark. In the 69th minute, Casemiro rose highest to meet a pinpoint cross from Bruno Fernandes, planting a firm header past Karl Darlow to pull one back. It marked Fernandes' 17th assist of a stellar individual campaign.
Leeds hold firm under pressure
The final twenty minutes devolved into a frantic display of end-to-end football. Manchester United threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, with Diogo Dalot and Matheus Cunha both seeing goal-bound efforts cleared off the line in a desperate scramble.
Leeds, however, remained disciplined in their defensive block. They absorbed immense pressure during seven minutes of stoppage time to secure a monumental three points. The victory moves Leeds six points clear of the drop zone, while Manchester United remains in a tight battle for Champions League qualification, currently sitting third and level on points with Aston Villa.
