Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a stunning early exit from the CAF Champions League on Friday night, crashing out in the second preliminary round after a 1-1 draw with Angolan side Wiliete SC at Loftus Versfeld. The result left the aggregate score level at 1-1, with Wiliete advancing on the away goals rule following a goalless first leg in Lubango last Sunday.

The Brazilians, the reigning African champions, failed to reach the group stages for the first time since 2015, ending an 11-year streak of qualification. The defeat ranks among the biggest shocks in recent CAF club football.

Early lead for the hosts

Sundowns started brightly and took the lead in the 11th minute. Tashreeq Matthews' effort from outside the box took a significant deflection off a Wiliete defender and found the net, leaving goalkeeper Elber Delgado stranded. The hosts created several further chances before the break, with Delgado denying Aubrey Modiba, while Ronwen Williams produced a fine save at the other end to keep out a header from Miguel Vieira.

Costly mistake changes the tie

The second half brought disaster early on. A misplaced pass from Cassius Mailula in the defensive third allowed Wiliete captain and Angolan international Mabululu to pounce. The experienced striker surged forward and curled a precise finish beyond the advancing Williams in the 49th minute, giving the visitors the crucial away goal.

Desperate push falls short

Sundowns threw everything forward in search of a winner. Goalkeeper Delgado produced a series of outstanding saves, including a double stop to deny Brayan Leon and Matthews, while Marcelo Allende's close range header was also kept out. Coach Miguel Cardoso made attacking changes, introducing more offensive options, but Wiliete's resolute defence held firm until the final whistle.

Historic night for the Angolan side

The Angolan debutants, making their first appearance in the competition's group stages, celebrated a historic result in front of a stunned Loftus crowd. Sundowns, who had already lifted the MTN8 this season, sat atop the Betway Premiership, and recently won the FIFA Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup, now face an early end to their title defence.

What lies ahead

The result leaves Orlando Pirates as the sole South African side currently through to the group stages after their emphatic progression, with the final preliminary round matches to be completed on Sunday.

Sundowns must now turn their full attention to domestic competitions and other remaining continental commitments as they look to recover from one of the most painful nights in their recent history.
