The South African sporting fraternity is in deep mourning today following the tragic passing of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, Jayden Adams, at the young age of 25. The news of his death was confirmed in an official statement released by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, on Saturday, 11 July 2026.
A promising talent taken too soon
Jayden Adams was widely regarded as one of the country's brightest footballing talents. His professional journey began at Stellenbosch FC, where he made history as the club's first academy graduate to sign a professional contract in August 2020. Over the course of his time with the Cape Winelands side, he made 139 appearances and played a pivotal role in their 2023 Carling Knockout victory. His talent earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he continued to excel, adding a Betway Premiership title and a CAF Champions League crown to his list of achievements.
On the international stage, Adams was a key figure for Bafana Bafana. He was part of the squad that secured bronze at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire and was a notable participant in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He featured in all three of South Africa's group matches during the tournament, contributing to the team's historic achievement of reaching the Round of 32 for the first time.
A legacy of character and resilience
Minister McKenzie shared a poignant personal recollection of the player, highlighting his immense character and dedication. The Minister recounted a match against Czechia in Atlanta where he noticed Adams looking unusually quiet on the bench after being substituted. It was later revealed that the young midfielder had played that match while carrying the fresh grief of losing his grandmother, Marianna, just hours before kickoff.
When the Minister reached out to offer his condolences at the time, he was struck by Adams's humble and appreciative response, noting that his commitment to wearing the national jersey in such difficult circumstances spoke to a depth of character and professionalism well beyond his years.
An appeal for privacy and respect
The cause of Jayden Adams's passing has not yet been officially confirmed. Minister McKenzie has issued a compassionate appeal to the public and the media to exercise restraint and avoid speculation during this incredibly difficult time, allowing his family and Mamelodi Sundowns the space and privacy they need.
On behalf of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Minister McKenzie extended his deepest condolences to Adams's family, his young daughter, his teammates at Mamelodi Sundowns, his fellow Bafana Bafana players and coaching staff, the South African Football Association, and the entire football fraternity.
