The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed a devastating series of events that took place on the N1 near Bela-Bela, Limpopo, on Saturday, 09 May 2026. The incident involved the official state vehicle of the Minister of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, which was being operated by a member of the Protection Security Services (PSS) at the time of the collision.

A heartbreaking sequence of events

The circumstances leading to the loss of life are particularly harrowing as they involve a double tragedy for a single family. A preliminary investigation suggests that a woman was attempting to cross the busy highway with her two children, one of whom was strapped to her back.

The trio was reportedly trying to reach the scene of an earlier incident on the opposite side of the road where the woman's husband had allegedly been struck and killed by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer.

Multiple fatalities confirmed

Tragically, while attempting to reach her husband, the woman and her children were involved in a second collision with the Minister's official vehicle. Both the mother and the infant succumbed to the injuries they sustained in the crash.

Response and legal protocols

In accordance with standard security and legal protocols, the Minister's driver and close protector stopped immediately following the accident. Dr. Motsoaledi and his security detail remained at the scene until emergency medical services and local police arrived to provide assistance and secure the area. Authorities subsequently obtained formal statements from all witnesses and parties present during the aftermath.

Independent investigation underway

Legal proceedings are now underway as the SAPS investigates two separate cases of culpable homicide regarding the deaths of the husband, the mother, and the child. Due to the fact that both drivers involved in these separate fatal accidents are members of the police service, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the investigation to ensure an impartial review of the facts.

The SAPS has extended its deepest condolences to the grieving family during this incredibly difficult period.
