Mozambican national sentenced to double life for the rape and murder of Kliptown minor
In a significant victory for the justice system in Gauteng, the Lenasia Regional Court has handed down a double life sentence to Jorge Tivane for the brutal rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl.
The 21-year-old Mozambican national was convicted following a harrowing investigation into the events of 19 December 2022 in Kliptown. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the ruling, viewing it as a stern message against gender-based violence and the exploitation of the most vulnerable members of society.
Investigation and forensic evidence
The case against Tivane was built on a combination of community vigilance and forensic precision. Members of the Kliptown community originally identified Tivane as the last person seen walking with the young victim toward a veld where her body was eventually discovered.
Following his arrest, Sergeant Mofokeng led an investigation that secured critical DNA evidence from a piece of clothing found on the deceased, definitively linking Tivane to the crime scene.
A predatory confession
In a court appearance on 3 July 2025, Tivane entered a guilty area for both charges. During his plea explanation, he confessed to a premeditated and predatory strategy, admitting that he lured the child into the bushes with the promise of sweets. He then proceeded to rape the victim before strangling her to death using a piece of clothing.
Prosecution arguments and final verdict
During the sentencing proceedings, State Prosecutor Tumi Maunye argued for the maximum possible penalty, highlighting the sheer brutality of the act. Maunye pointed out that the victim was not only a minor but also lived with mental challenges, making the exploitation of her trust even more heinous. The prosecution further emphasised Tivane's complete lack of remorse and the permanent trauma inflicted upon the victim's grieving family.
The court ultimately accepted the State's submissions, ordering that Tivane serve one life term for murder and a second life term for the rape of a minor. This sentencing serves as a reaffirmation of the NPA's commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of child abuse and violent crime face the full might of the law.
