Orlando Pirates claimed the bragging rights in the 186th Soweto Derby with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, moving top of the Betway Premiership in the process.

How the goals unfolded

Yanela Mbuthuma opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a strike that took a heavy deflection off Chiefs defender Thabo Moloisane and looped past goalkeeper Brandon Petersen. The lead lasted only six minutes. A costly error from Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who spilled a routine cross, allowed Pule Mmodi to pounce and equalise in the 30th minute.

The sides went into half-time locked at 1-1. Pirates dominated the second half and restored their advantage in the 55th minute when Tshepang Moremi finished a swift counter-attack, with Thapelo Mokobodi involved in the build-up. Moremi's goal proved decisive.

Late drama

Chiefs' frustration boiled over late as centre-back Inacio Miguel received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Amakhosi with ten men for the closing stages. Pirates held firm to secure the three points.

League standings impact

The result takes the defending champions to 25 points from nine matches, two clear of Mamelodi Sundowns (23 points after nine games). Chiefs remain on 14 points after suffering their first league defeat of the season under coach Fernando da Cruz.

What it means

The match, played in front of a capacity crowd at the Calabash, once again underlined the intensity and significance of South Africa's biggest club fixture. Pirates extended their strong recent form, while Chiefs will look to bounce back quickly as the season continues.
