Defending champions Orlando Pirates took a valuable step towards retaining the MTN8 title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the first leg of their semi-final on Saturday, 22 August 2026.
The match, played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, was decided by a solitary goal from Deon Hotto in the 43rd minute. The Namibian defender combined well with Gamphani Lungu before firing a strike past Melusi Buthelezi to give the Buccaneers a precious away advantage.
Key statistics
Pirates controlled much of the contest, finishing with 55% possession and 15 shots to Sekhukhune's seven, including five efforts on target compared to the hosts' one. The visitors created the clearer chances and showed the composure expected of four-time defending champions in the competition.
Second-half battle
Hotto's goal, coming just before half-time, forced Sekhukhune to chase the game after the break. Babiba Noko pushed forward in search of an equaliser but struggled to break down a disciplined Pirates defence marshalled by goalkeeper Sipho Chaine. The Soweto side held firm to secure a clean sheet and a one-goal cushion heading into the return fixture.
What lies ahead
The second leg is scheduled for Saturday, 29 August at 15:00, with Pirates expected to host at the Orlando Amstel Arena. A draw or better result would see the Buccaneers advance to the final as they chase a fifth consecutive MTN8 crown.
Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou had stressed the need to play smart on the smaller pitch in Polokwane, and his side delivered a professional, low-risk performance. Sekhukhune, who have historically made life difficult for the Buccaneers, will now need to overturn the deficit in the return leg if they are to reach the final.
The other MTN8 semi-final first leg, between Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows, is set for Sunday, 23 August at 15:00.
Looking forward
For Orlando Pirates, the mission of becoming five-time successive MTN8 champions remains firmly on course after this important away win.
