Orlando Pirates climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership table last night after a professional 2-0 victory over AmaZulu FC at a vibrant Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Buccaneers capitalised on their momentum to leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns, establishing a three-point lead at the summit of the standings.

The night belonged to rising star Relebohile Mofokeng, whose masterclass performance proved the difference in a high-stakes encounter.

Mofokeng Sets the Tone

Pirates started the match with intent, dominating possession and forcing the home side into a defensive shell.

The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when former AmaZulu winger Tshepang Moremi delivered a pinpoint cross into the box. Mofokeng, showing exceptional timing, ghosted past the defenders to head the ball past Darren Johnson, marking a rare headed goal for the young playmarker.

Despite the early lead, AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane remained tactically rigid, keeping his side compact in hopes of a counter-attacking opening that rarely materialised.

Second-Half Resilience

The second-half saw Usuthu attempt to claw their way back, with Zwane introducing fresh legs in Athini Maqokolo and Langa Mhlongo.

AmaZulu's best chance fell to Mhlongo, whose glancing header from a Riaan Hanamub free-kick forced a spectacular reflex save from Pirates's goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

However, the Soweto Giants remained the more clinical side. As AmaZulu pushed high in search of an equaliser during stoppage time, they were caught on the break.

The Decisive Blow

In the 94th minute, Mofokeng once again took center stage. After being set up by Evidence Makgopa, he unleashed a powerful low drive from the edge of the area. The shot struck the upright, only to ricochet off the back of the diving Darren Johnson and into the net.

While officially recorded as an own goal, the strike was a testament to the relentless pressure applied by the Pirates' attack.

What's Next?

Orlando Pirates look to extend their 19-match unbeaten domestic run when they travel to face TTM in cup action this weekend. Meanwhile, AmaZulu will need to regroup as they look to maintain their position in the top four of the Premiership.
