Pilot perished during light aircraft crash outside Bloemfontein

The investigation has been launched following death of the 45-year-old male pilot in the light aircraft crash occurred outside Bloemfontein in Free State on Friday morning.

The emergency services responded to the scene confirmed that the four-seater aircraft had only one occupant when an accident occurred.

The South African Police Service(SAPS) confirmed that an investigation has been launched following a fatal light aircraft accident that occurred in the Ferreira area.

"On Friday, 2 January 2026, at approximately 10:20, police were dispatched to the scene following reports of a plane crash. Upon arrival, first responders found Emergency Medical Services already on-site, attending to a male individual who was trapped within the wreckage.

“Tragically, the pilot, a 45-year-old male, who is believed to have been the sole occupant of the aircraft, was declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel,” said Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli.

Kareli stated that the police were trying to find the relatives of the deceased and police are working hand-in-hand with Aviation Investigators to determine the cause of the accident.

"Investigators are currently working to locate and notify the next of kin. The identity of the deceased will be withheld until this process is complete.

“The SAPS will be working closely with Aviation Investigators to determine the technical cause of the crash. An inquest docket has been opened for further investigation following the passing away of the 45-year-old pilot,” concluded Kareli.
