SANDF recovers stolen vehicles and narcotics at the Mozambique-South Africa border
The 14 South African Infantry Battalion achieved a major breakthrough at the Mozambique-South African border on 31 March 2026. During a series of strategic patrols, the SANDF intercepted three stolen vehicles and seized over 50kg of dagga valued at approximately R220,400.
Tactical interception near Sugarcane 3
The operation's primary success occurred at approximately 06:04 when a foot patrol team, led by Lance Corporal S. Ntshobane of Bravo Section, Platoon 3, was monitoring the Sugarcane 3 area. While patrolling the Mozambique-South Africa border fence, the team identified three suspicious vehicles moving along the border line.
Upon noticing the approaching patrol, the drivers immediately stopped, abandoned their vehicles, and fled the scene on foot. The recovered fleet included a white Toyota Fortuner GD6, a Ford Ranger, and a Mahindra bakkie. These vehicles were secured and later handed over to the South African Police Service in Tonga, where investigations confirmed they had all been reported stolen by their rightful owners.
Significant narcotics seizure in Zonstraal
The battalion's success continued that same day in the Zonstraal area of responsibility. During their patrol, members discovered a consignment of dagga weighing 50.10 kg, with an estimated street value of R220,400. The illicit substance was seized and processed in accordance with operational procedures.
Lieutenant M.J. Kekana, the Platoon 3 Commander, activated military police support following the vehicle recovery. Staff Sergeant E. Buytendorp and Corporal K. Steyn from the Military Police responded swiftly to the scene to assist in the processing of the property and contraband.
Strengthening national security
These successful operations highlight the continued vigilance and effectiveness of the 14 South African Infantry Battalion in safeguarding the country's borders. By maintaining a constant presence along the Mozambique-South Africa border, the SANDF remains a critical barrier against cross-border crime and the illegal movement of stolen goods.
