The Shoprite Group is officially expanding beyond the traditional grocery basket. In a strategic move announced alongside its annual financial results, Africa's largest supermarket retailer signed an agreement to acquire a 100% stake in Vida e Caffé, the continent's biggest coffee chain.
The transaction, executed on 20 August 2026, encompasses Vida's entire South African and international footprint. While the deal remains subject to customary regulatory approvals, it is anticipated to officially become effective during Shoprite's 2027 financial year.
A major leap into the quick-service restaurant space
Founded in 2001 on Kloof Street in Cape Town by Rui Esteves and Brad Armitage, Vida e Caffé grew from a single European-inspired espresso bar into an African powerhouse with approximately 400 corporate and franchise stores. Its footprint spans high streets, corporate offices, retail centres, drive-thrus, and fuel forecourts.
While Shoprite has historically participated in the quick-service restaurant (QSR) and beverage sector through private-label products, in-store partnerships, and B2B catering, the group has lacked a dedicated standalone food-service chain. Acquiring Vida e Caffé instantly grants the retail giant an established, highly recognisable brand with a diverse, on-the-go customer base.
Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht noted that the company deeply admires Vida's business model and views the brand as authentic, innovative, and deeply aligned with modern consumer lifestyle trends.
Beyond the supermarket aisle
The acquisition reflects a broader retail trend: dominant supermarket groups are aggressively pursuing adjacent markets to capture consumer spending outside of weekly grocery runs. By moving into high-frequency, convenience-led categories like specialty coffee and quick meals, Shoprite can engage consumers multiple times a day.
This ecosystem expansion mirrors other successful specialty plays by the retailer, such as its rapidly growing pet-care format, Petshop Science. Furthermore, the deal arrives on the back of a robust financial year for Shoprite, which reported a 7.2% increase in group sales to approximately R270.8 billion, propelled by massive demand across its Supermarkets RSA division and its Sixty60 delivery service.
What this means for consumers and the market
Market analysts expect the acquisition to shake up South Africa's fiercely competitive coffee and QSR landscape. With Shoprite's immense supply chain efficiencies, logistical prowess, and financial backing, Vida e Caffé is positioned for an accelerated phase of growth.
For everyday consumers, the tie-up could herald greater accessibility to the brand, potential loyalty integration with Shoprite's Xtra Savings ecosystem, and an intensified battle for the daily caffeine fix as rival retailers scramble to counter Shoprite's expanding convenience empire.
