Orlando Pirates missed a golden opportunity to seize control of the Betway Premiership title race after being held to a tense 0-0 draw by a resilient Durban City in front of a sold-out crowd at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers entered the clash knowing a victory would lift them level on points with current leaders Mamelodi Sundowns – whom they trail by three points – but with a crucially superior goal difference. Following Sundowns' midweek slip-up against TS Galaxy, the destiny of the league title was placed squarely in Pirates' hands.

However, a masterclass in defensive resilience from the visitors has forced Abdeslam Ouaddou's men to wait until the final day of the season to settle the championship.

The result leaves Orlando Pirates in second place, two points adrift of Sundowns with one game remaining. They must now secure a maximum points haul away to ORBIT College in Mbombela next Saturday to claim their first league crown in 14 seasons. Meanwhile, the hard-fought point moves Durban City down to eighth position with 39 points from 29 points.

Asare denies dominant Buccaneers

From the opening whistle, the hosts asserted their dominance, backed by a vociferous home crowd  desperate to witness a historic step toward league glory. Coach Ouaddou raised eyebrows with his team selection, handing a surprise first start of the season to Diski Challenge graduate Simphiwe Selepe, while Yanela Mbuthuma was given the nod up front ahead of Evidence Makgopa.

Pirates instantly flooded forward, asking questions of the Durban City rearguard as early as the second minute. Oswin Appollis found space on the edge of the box and unleashed a stinging, deflected effort that forced Ghanaian shot-stopper Frederick Asare into a brilliant reflex save to parry the ball wide for a corner.

The Citizens chose to sit deep, absorbing immense pressure while looking to catch the Buccaneers on the counter-attack. Pirates continued to test Asare's resolve, with the inform Relebohile Mofokeng cutting inside in the 26th minute to unleash a powerful strike, which the Ghanaian goalkeeper safely gathered at the second attempt. Minutes later, Kamogele Sebelebele tried his luck from long range, but his effort sailed harmlessly over the crossbar.

The Soweto giants suffered a significant setback late in the first half when Mbuthuma went down holding his leg after a heavy challenge. He was forced off in the 39th minute, paving the way for the introduction of Makgopa, but despite the change in personnel, the teams retreated to the tunnel locked at 0-0.

City stand tall under late onslaught

The second half followed an identical script, with Orlando Pirates throwing everything forward in a desperate search for the elusive breakthrough.

Early in the second period, the Buccaneers were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the penalty area after Joslin Kamatuka fouled Deon Hotto. Mofokeng stepped up and curled a spectacular effort over the wall, but an inspired Asare produced another world-class save to deny the youngster.

As the clock ticked down, the tension inside the stadium grew palpable. In the 69th minute, Appollis turned provider, picking out Makgopa with a precise cross into the box, but the substitute striker could only watch in agony as his headed effort flashed narrowly wide of the upright.

In a final throw of the dice, Ouaddou introduced Tshepang Moremi and Abdoulaye Mariko for the final 20 minutes to injection fresh energy into the attack. Ten minutes from time, Appollis again spearheaded an attack, bursting through the middle before unleashing a low drive toward the near corner, but Asare reacted quickly to turn it around the post.

Durban City's defense, marshalled brilliantly by captain Siphamandla Ncanana, stood resolute against the late onslaught to secure a vital clean sheet and break the hearts of the home supporters.

Final day drama awaits

While the stalemate feels like a massive missed opportunity for the Ghost, the title race is far from over. Thanks to their game-in-hand advantage over Mamelodi Sundowns, the Buccaneers still control their own destiny.

All eyes now turn to Mbombela next week Saturday, where Orlando Pirates must summon their champion spirit against ORBIT College to finally dethrone Sundowns and complete an extraordinary domestic treble.
