Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has officially welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States, Israel, and Iran, hailing it as a “vital step” toward regional stability and the restoration of global trade routes.

The ceasefire, announced on April 8, 2026, aims to pause a period of intense hostilities that has significantly disrupted international shipping and pressured the global economy. In a statement released by the UK Government, Cooper emphasised the importance of this window for diplomacy.

Restoring the Strait of Hormuz

A primary focus of the UK's diplomatic efforts has been the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy supplies. The Foreign Secretary noted that Iran must immediately cease all mining, drone attacks, and other attempts to block commercial shipping.

Last week, Cooper led talks with over 40 countries to address the urgent need to restore freedom of navigation. The statement highlighted that de-escalation is essential to help UK citizens currently feeling the impact of the conflict on their cost of living at home.

The path to permanent peace

While the ceasefire is temporary, the UK Government is looking toward the upcoming negotiations in Pakistan as a foundation for a lasting settlement.

“It is vital that the proposed talks lead to a full end to the conflict and ensure that Iran does not continue to threaten the Strait or its neighbours,” Cooper stated.

The Foreign Secretary also expanded the scope of the peace efforts, calling for an urgent end to hostilities in Lebanon.

Next steps

The UK has pledged to continue working alongside the shipping, insurance, and energy sectors to restore confidence in Middle Eastern trade routes. As the two-week pause begins, British officials will continue to coordinate with international partners to ensure the ceasefire holds and leads to a comprehensive resolution.
