In a season that is fast becoming a victory lap for Hansi Flick's rejuvenated side, FC Barcelona took a massive step toward retaining their La Liga title on Saturday.

A dominant 4-1 victory over cross-town rivals RCD Espanyol at the Spotify Camp Nou didn't just secure bragging rights; it opened up a commanding nine-point lead at the top of the table.

With second-placed Real Madrid stumbling to a 1-1 draw against Girona just 24 hours earlier, the door was wide open for the Blaugrana. They didn't just walk through it – they burst through.

The Ferran renaissance

The night belonged to Ferran Torres. After a frustrating 13-game goal drought dating back to late January, the forward silenced his critics in emphatic fashion. In the opening 10th minutes, Torres began the scoring by rising high to nod home a perfectly weighted corner.

He doubled the lead in the 25th minute, finishing a lightning-fast counter-attack with a clinical low strike. Torres' celebration – gesturing “talking hands” toward the stands – sent a clear message to the local press: the “Shark” is back.

Momentum shifts and late strikes

Espanyol threatened to make a game of it in the 56th minute when Pol Lozano pulled one back, firing a powerful rebound into the net from just inside the area.

The strike briefly unsettled the hosts, but teenage phenom Lamile Yamal soon restored order. In the 87th minute, Yamal capped off a brilliant individual performance by slotting home a close-range finish following another deadly counter-attack.

The rout was completed in the 89th minute when Marcus Rashford joined the party. Connecting with a cross from the returning Frenkie de Jong, Rashford hooked a volley home to secure the three points and ignite the Camp Nou crowd.

Eyes on the continent

Despite the domestic euphoria, the victory serves as a vital morale booster ahead of Tuesday's high-stakes Champions League quarter-final second leg. Barcelona currently trails Atletico Madrid 2-0 after a disappointing first-leg loss at home.

Flick took a gamble by starting regulars like Pedri and Yamal against Espanyol, but the risk paid off. Barcelona looks sharp, confident, and – most importantly – hungry. If they can carry this clinical form into the midweek clash, a historic treble remains a distinct, albeit difficult, possibility.

The current La Liga standings show FC Barcelona sitting at the top with 79 points, followed by Real Madrid at 70 points and Villarreal at 58 points.
