A catastrophic multi-vehicle accident brought the N3 highway to a standstill near the Tugela Toll Plaza in the early hours of Thursday, April 2,2026. The collision, which occurred around 3:00 AM involved a bus and two trucks traveling southbound.

According to a formal statement by Siboniso Duma, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, the incident was triggered by a Zimbabwean truck driver who performed an illegal U-turn on the freeway.

Casualties and emergency response

The MEC revealed that the driver claimed he was attempting the dangerous maneuver to search for money to pay the toll fees at the upcoming plaza. This decision led to a violent collision that left 25 South African passengers with various injuries.

He confirmed that emergency services acted swiftly to transport the victims to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital, where they are currently receiving quality medical care. Fortunately, 29 other passengers on the bus escaped the crash without injury.

Law enforcement and documentation investigation

The driver was immediately taken into custody by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) Ladysmith team. Following the arrest, Zibusiso Dlamini, the newly appointed Head of Department, launched a comprehensive investigation in coordination with Operation Shanela, the South African Police Service, and the Home Affairs Immigration Unit. A primary focus of the probe is to determine if both the driver and the truck owner posses the necessary legal documentation to operate within the country.

A pattern of road traffic violations

This accident highlights an ongoing crisis regarding heavy vehicle compliance in the compliance. The RTI recently intercepted and impounded more than 17 trucks for using fraudulent documents. MEC Duma noted that this is not an isolate case, citing a previous incident on November 27 where an undocumented driver caused a pile-up at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza, as well as a recent arrest in Umkondeni for driving under the influence.

Intensification of Operation #NenzaniLaEzweni

In response to the rising number of accidents, the department is intensifying the #NenzaniLaEzweni operation. To date, more than 25 undocumented foreign national truck drivers have been arrested under this initiative, with several already serving prison sentences or facing deportation.

Authorities have resolved to sustain these high-pressure operations on the N3 and N2 corridors, maintaining a strict presence at over 17 weighbridges across KwaZulu-Natal to prevent further tragedies on the road.
