Actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana, best known for her roles in Isibaya and Uzalo, has been arrested for speeding and is due back in court as KwaZulu-Natal authorities warn of a tough festive-season crackdown.

Arrest and court appearance

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport confirmed that Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers from Park Rynie arrested Mqokiyana along the N2 at Ellingham. She was driving a BMX X3 SUV and was clocked at 198 km/h in a 120 km/h zone. She appeared in court on 19 October 2026 and is scheduled to reappear at the Scottburgh Magistrates Court on 28 October 2026.

MEC warns of zero tolerance

MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma used the case to underline the province's zero-tolerance stance. “The arrest of actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana is a reminder to all motorists that the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation is still in full swing,” Duma said in a media statement. He warned that the RTI “will have no mercy this season,” noting that the current Transport Month operations have already demonstrated the department's approach.

Between 15 and 21 October 2026, RTI and Operation Shanela teams issued 421 speeding charges, stopped 12 073 vehicles, charged 1 719 motorists, and impounded 140 vehicles without permits, among other enforcement actions. Further multi-disciplinary and drunk-driving operations were planned for the following week.

From AFDA dropout to fan favourite

Born Asavela Mngqithi on 4 June 1996 in Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, Mqokiyana was raised primarily by her mother and grandmother in Lamontville, south of Durban. Her father is well-known football coach Manqoba Mngqithi. She enrolled for a camera-and-editing degree at AFDA but left in her third year because of financial difficulties.

Her acting breakthrough came in 2018. After auditioning for Isithembiso, she was called back and cast as the rebellious Ntwenhle Ndlovu in the fifth season of Mzansi Magic's Isibaya. The role, originally expected to be short-term, became a fan favourite and kept her on the show until its final season in 2021.

She followed that success with the role of Amogelang in the second season of 1Magic's Abomama (2021), then appeared as Amahle in season two of e.tv's Durban Gen. After taking time out for motherhood – she welcomed a daughter in 2023 – she returned to screens in June 2025 as Nurse Sizakele on SABC1's Uzalo, one of the country's most-watched soapies. Colleagues and fans welcomed the comeback, and Mqokiyana herself described the character as independent and intelligent.

Beyond acting

Beyond acting, she has worked as a model, director and content creator, and has spoken about wanting to explore more aspects of the industry while remaining selective about roles that set a positive example for her child.

Mqokiyana married in 2022 and divorced around 2024/2025. She has spoken publicly about focusing on co-parenting and her career after the separation.

The court appearance on 28 October will determine the next steps in the speeding case. In the meantime, KZN authorities continue to stress that high-profile status offers no protection from traffic enforcement.
