Orlando Pirates kept their championship dreams burning bright on Tuesday night with a clinical 2-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at a packed Athlone Stadium.

The win significantly tightens the race at the summit of the Betway Premiership, leaving the Buccaneers just two points adrift of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with only three matches remaining in the season.

Dominating the opening exchange

The Soweto giants dictated the tempo from the opening whistle, asserting dominance through the creative spark of Relebohile Mofokeng and the relentless engine of Thalente Mbatha. Despite early missed opportunities by Oswin Appollis and Patrick Maswanganyi, the pressure eventually buckled the home side's defense late in the first half.

Evidence Makgopa broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute, expertly connecting with a Maswanganyi free-kick to nod home his sixth league goal of the campaign.

Doubling the advantage before the break

The momentum stayed firmly with the visitors as they doubled their advantage deep into first-half stoppage time. Patrick Maswanganyi, transitioning from provider to scorer, swung in a dangerous cross that evaded everyone – including the leaping Makgopa – to bounce into the far corner of the net after Sage Stephens failed to clear.

The second goal served as a gut punch to the Winelands side, who had already lost Thapelo Mokobodi to a groin injury earlier in the half.

Resolute defense seals the clean sheet

Stellenbosch emerged with renewed intent after the interval, bolstered by the introduction of Ashley Cupido and Vuyolwethu Andries. They came agonizingly close to clawing their way back into the contest when Genino Palace struck the woodwork in the 77th minute, but the Pirates' defense remained resolute.

Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was largely untroubled for much of the evening, ultimately securing his 18th clean sheet of the season and matching a long-standing club record.

A statement of intent for the final stretch

As the clock ticked down, the Buccaneers shifted into an efficient game-management mode, effectively neutralizing the Stellenbosch attack. The final whistle confirmed a vital three points for Abdeslam Ouaddou's men, marking their 19th win of a remarkable season.

With the title race now on a knife-edge, Orlando Pirates have sent a clear message to the defending champions: the hunt is very much on.
