The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has demanded the immediate dismissal of Councillor Nomoya Mnisi from her executive role in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

Citing grave concerns over criminal conduct and corruption, DA Caucus Leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku called for action following the controversial withdrawal of a criminal case involving Mnisi and her bodyguard. The party insists that Dada Morero must act to uphold the rule of law and prevent political interference from shielding executive members from accuntability.

Serious criminal allegations and legal scrutiny

The core of the controversy involves harrowing allegations that have recently entered the public domain. These charges include the kidnapping, pointing of a firearm at, and assault of a minor boy. The incident reportedly occurred after the boy was found with Mnisi's minor daughter.

The DA has expressed deep concern over the sudden withdrawal of these charges, prompting them to write to the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andy Mothibi. The party is seeking a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the case withdrawal to ensure that SAPS procedures and legal protocols were strictly adhered to.

Demand for executive accountability in the metro

Beyond the legal investigation, the DA has directed its pressure toward Executive Mayor Dada Morero. The party asserts that under Section 60 of the Municipal Systems Act, the Mayor possesses the clear authority to appoint and dismiss MMCs within the metro.

The DA argues that by allowing Mnisi to remain in her post, Mayor Morero is effectively protecting a member of his executive while they are clouded by allegations of violent crime and corruption. They contend that maintaining the status quo undermines the integrity of the City of Johannesburg's governance.

Commitment to the rule of law

The Democratic Alliance emphasises that the residents of Johannesburg deserve a transparent government that prioritises justice over political protection. The caucus has reiterated its commitment to fighting for equal justice before the law, regardless of an individual's political standing.

By demanding this removal and a high-level prosecutorial review, the DA aims to ensure that the City's leadership remains held to the highest ethical and legal standards, insisting that no official in the municipality should be above the law.
