A devastating vehicle collision at a prominent Verulam intersection left three people hospitalised with serious injuries on Sunday evening.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 19:42 at the junction of the R102 and Wick Street, involved a white Toyota Tazz and a black tow truck tasked with transporting a Ferrari.

Circumstances of the crash

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived on the scene to find the Toyota Tazz decimated by the force of the impact. Initial reports indicate that the Tazz was traveling northbound on the R102 when it collided with the tow truck, which was moving in the opposite direction.

The small passenger car sustained catastrophic damage to its front end, windscreen, and left passenger side, trapping the occupants within the wreckage.

Critical injuries and technical extrication

The recovery process required a coordinated effort from emergency services. The driver of the Toyota was treated for head trauma and suspected internal injuries, while a rear-seat passenger suffered multiple injuries affecting the head, spine, and legs.

The most complex rescue involved the front-seat passenger, who sustained severe head and leg injuries; firefighters were forced to use specialized equipment to extricate him from the mangled frame of the vehicle.

Medical stabilization and investigation

Once stabilized by paramedics from a private ambulance service, all three victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical care. While the high-value cargo on the tow truck drew significant attention, the primary focus remained on the life-saving efforts for the Tazz occupants. Local authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the crash.
