Kaizer Chiefs' last night victory against Mamelodi Sundowns during Nedbank Cup semifinal has revived fading hopes for the Soweto giant which has struggled for more than a decade to reach cup competition finals in the South African top-flight.
Amakhosi secured its spot in the Nedbank Cup final by defeating Masandawana 2-1 in a full-packed Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane on Sunday evening at 18:00.
During that match,Sundowns opened scoring with a beautiful goal scored by Teboho Mokoena through free-kick which was few metres away from the 18-yard before the end of first-half stoppage time,then the home team went on break leading 1-0.
The first goal for Phefeni Boys was scored on the 57th minute by Wandile Duba and the second goal netted on the 89th minute by Ashley Du Preez who came in as a substitute.
At the end of 90 minutes,Duba was chosen as the Nedbank Cup Man of the Match because during an entire match he played a crucial role to ensure that his club proceed to the last round of the Nedbank Cup competition.
In the Nedbank Cup final,Chiefs will encounter its main rival Orlando Pirates which won 1-0 crushing Marumo Gallants on Sunday afternoon at Orlando Pirates,Soweto in Johannesburg.
Chiefs and Pirates will meet each other in Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday,10 May 2025,at this stage the time for that match is unknown and the tickets are not opened for sale yet.
The Soweto rivals met for the last time in the final of this cup competition back in 2006 when it was called Absa Cup,Amakhosi lifted that trophy after defeating Amabhakabhaka 5-3 during penalties shootout as the game ended 0-0 in the extra-time,that final was played at Kings Park Stadium.
Chiefs lifted Nedbank Cup for the last time in the 2012/13 when defeated SuperSport United 1-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium while was still coached by Stuart Baxter.
Chiefs is expected to sweat blood if they want to lift another Nedbank Cup because that will be achieved not so easily as they will two times defending champions Pirates which is eyeing to win this trophy for the third time in a row.
These clubs will face each other twice in a period of one week,their first encounter will be on 3 May 2025 where they will be fighting for three points,Chiefs wants that points so that will secure its spot in the top 8 before the end of the season,and in the meantime Pirates is challenging the league title and is trailing behind Mamelodi Sundowns which is sitting on top of the league with 56 points.
