The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has announced the profound loss of the Chairperson of Committees, Dr. Nkululeko Ntuthuko Godfrey Mahlaba, who passed away on Saturday, 04 July 2026. The Speaker of the Legislature, Nontembeko Boyce, MPL, expressed deep sadness over the passing of a leader who was widely respected for his dedicated service to the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

A legacy of public service

Dr. Mahlaba's career was marked by a commitment to public service across health, local government, and provincial government sectors. Having served as a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature representing the African National Congress since August 2022, he also served as a member of the Legislature's Strategic Leadership Committee.

His previous provincial roles included serving as the Member of the Executive Council for Human Settlements and Public Works from August 2022 to May 2023, followed by a tenure as MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture from May 2023 until May 2024. Before his provincial responsibilities, Dr. Mahlaba served as a Proportional Representative Councillor and later as the Mayor of Newcastle Local Municipality between 2019 and 2021. Prior to entering public office, he had dedicated his life to serving communities in the Amajuba District as a medical doctor.

Advancing democratic governance

Boyce highlighted that Dr. Mahlaba's leadership as Chairperson of Committees significantly contributed to the advancement of democratic governance in the province by strengthening the oversight and accountability role of the Legislature. Until his passing, he remained deeply engaged in legislative work, recently leading a successful multi-party delegation to the Amajuba District to prepare for the “Taking Legislature to the People” programme scheduled for September 2026.

Remembering a visionary leader

Reflecting on his character, Boyce described Dr. Mahlaba as a dedicated public servant noted for his cool demeanour, visionary leadership, and ability to unite people across political and institutional divides. The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the African National Congress. Further details regarding memorial and  funeral arrangements will be communicated once they have been confirmed by the Mahlaba family.
