KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has issued a forceful condemnation following a tragic incident in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, 19 June 2026, which claimed the life of a Malawian foreign national. The violence, which occurred at the Jika Joe informal settlement, also left two other individuals with serious injuries that necessitated hospital treatment.
Context of the incident
The incident unfolded after a march involving more than 2,000 participants. While the demonstration, which originated at Dales Park and concluded at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall, remained peaceful throughout its official proceedings, reports indicate that a group later detached from the crowd and descended upon the Jika Joe settlement, leading to the fatal attack.
Premier's stance on violence
In his official response, Premier Ntuli extended his deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the deceased and expressed his wishes for the injured victims to make a full and rapid injury. He characterised the events as a senseless act of criminality that is entirely incompatible with a democratic and law-abiding society.
While the Premier acknowledged that communities possess genuine concerns regarding socio-economic challenges and illegal immigration, he maintained that such grievances must exclusively be addressed through lawful and constitutional means.
Warning against vigilantism
The Premier issued a firm warning against the dangers of vigilantism and mob justice, emphasising that no amount of frustration or disagreement can justify the targeting of individuals or acts of violence. He argued that criminal elements appeared to have hijacked the earlier demonstration, stressing that acts of criminality must not be permitted to disguise themselves as legitimate community activism. He further warned that such behaviour only serves to fracture social cohesion and deepen community divisions.
Government and police response
To address the aftermath of this violence, Premier Ntuli has directed the South African Police Service and relevant law enforcement agencies to work tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for the murder and assaults are identified, apprehended, and successfully prosecuted. Asserting that no person is above the law, he insisted that there will be no impunity for such violent acts.
Additionally, the Premier commended the Public Order Policing Unit for their professional intervention, which succeeded in stabilising the volatile situation and preventing further bloodshed.
