The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has successfully apprehended two Lesotho nationals following a double murder that took place at a tavern in Ga-Selepe village on the night of Thursday, 02 July 2026. This crime occurred within the Mecklenburg policing precinct located in the Sekhukhune District.
Details of the operation and suspect arrests
The arrest of the first suspect, a 50-year-old, followed an intelligence-led operation by Burgersfort and Mecklenburg SAPS detectives. Acting on information that the suspect had sought medical treatment for injuries sustained during the incident, police located him at a local hospital, where he was positively identified and placed under arrest. Although he initially denied involvement and firearm possession, police recovered a 9mm pistol used in the crime, which had been reported stolen in Midrand, Gauteng, in October 2025. Authorities also seized a white BMW with no registration plates that is believed to have been used during the commission of the crime.
A second suspect, a 24-year-old Lesotho national, was apprehended in a separate but related operation in Sehunyane village. While he was initially charged with contravening the Immigration Act, further investigations linked him to the main accused and the recovered firearm. He has now been charged with two counts of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Upcoming court appearances
Both suspects are expected to appear before the Mecklenburg Periodic Court on Monday, 06 July 2026. The 50-year-old suspect faces two counts of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm, while the 24-year-old faces the same charges in addition to the contravention of the Immigration Act.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, commended the team for their dedication and professionalism, noting that the incident remains under investigation as the motive for the murders is currently unknown.
