The cultural heartbeat of South Africa is set to pulse louder than ever as the Metro FM Music Awards (MMA26) officially unveils its nominees for the historic debut of the Best Maskandi category.
In a move that celebrates the genre's massive influence and its triumphant return to Durban, the SABC has shortlisted five heavyweights who have defined the traditional soundscape over the past year. Leading the charge are households names Khuzani and Mzukulu, alongside the versatile uMafikizolo ,Siya Ntuli, and the rising force Sminofu.
The battle for the crown
The inclusion of Maskandi in the 2026 awards marks a significant shift for Metro FM, acknowledging the genre's transition from “traditional” niche to mainstream chart-topper. The nominated works represent the absolute pinnacle of Zulu folk-soul:
- Khuzani nominated for Umanikinikana
- uMafikizolo nominated for Uzoncengwa Unyoko
- Mzukulu (featuring Intombi Yasolundi) nominated for Ubu Ghost Bami
- Siya Ntuli nominated for Amaphiko
- Sminofu (featuring Zee Nxumalo) nominated for Sajola Kamnandi
A homecoming in Durban
The announcement comes as the awards return to eThekwini for a three-year residency, backed by a R60 million investment from the city. For many, the “Best Maskandi” category is the crown jewel of this homecoming.
“Maskandi is not just a genre; it is a cultural movement that has shaped the soundscape of our nation,” said Nada Wotshela, SABC Radio Group Executive.
Khuzani, fresh off a win for Best Maskandi Album at the 2025 SAMAs, enters the race as a formidable favorite. However, he faces stiff competition from Sminofu, whose collaboration with Zee Nxumalo, “Sajola Kamnandi,” has successfully bridged the gap between traditional Maskandi and modern pop audiences.
