Oscar Pistorius will be released on parole

The Department of Correctional Services(DCS) has confirmed today that Oscar Pistorius will be released on parole next year on January 2024 after serving his sentence for killing his lover Reeva Steenkamp.

According to statement,the Department of Correctional Services(DCS) confirmed parole placement for Mr Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius,effectively from 5 January 2024.Mr Pistorius was initially convicted of culpable homicide in 2014,but the case went through a number of appeals and was eventually ratified to 13 years and five months in 2017.

The department has clarified that the decision to release Pistorious was reached after thorough considerations.

The department said:"The parole placement decision was taken by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board(CSPB) having assessed Mr Pistorius' profile and other material submitted for the purposes of parole consideration.

Classified as a first time offender with a positive support system,Oscar Pistorius' parole placement is in line with Section 73 of the Correctional Services Act Parole placement forms part of the total rehabilitation programme in correcting offending behaviour and may include continuation of programmes aimed at reintegration whilst in the system of community corrections."

The department maintained that Pistorious will finish the part of his sentence outside doing community service.

The department concluded that Mr Pistorius will complete the remainder of the sentence in the system of community corrections and will be subjected to supervision in compliance with parole conditions until his sentence expires.

Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp multiple times through a bathroom door on Valentine's Day in 2013.

Before his conviction for killing his girlfriend he was a darling of almost sports enthusiasts and he was one of the most successfully Paralympic sprinter in the South African history.
