Orlando Pirates surged back to the top of the Betway Premiership table last night, Wednesday, March 11, 2026, with a clinical 2-0 victory over Richards Bay FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena.
The win puts the Buccaneers level on 47 points with Mamelodi Sundowns, but their superior goal difference gives them the edge as the title race enters its final, high-octane stretch.
The breakthrough
Under the watchful eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos in the stands, the Buccaneers started with intent. The breakthrough arrived in the 26th minute through a beautifully orchestrated team move:
- Relebohile Mofokeng — who was a standout performer throughout the night — threaded a pinpoint pass to find Kamogelo Sebelebele.
- Sebelebele displayed exceptional pace to reach the byline before cutting the ball back into the danger zone.
- Oswin Appollis was perfectly positioned to tap home his fourth league goal of the season, rewarding Pirates' early dominance.
Second-half drama and the seal
While the “Natala Rich Boyz” improved in the second half and pushed for an equaliser, they struggled with their “killer instinct” in the final third. Pirates' defence, led by Nkosinathi Sibisi and goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, remained resolute.
The home side almost doubled their lead in the 82nd minute when Mofokeng's powerful strike rattled the crossbar. However, the cushion finally came in the stoppage time (90+5). Substitute Tshepang Moremi was fouled in the box, earning a penalty that Evidence Makgopa stepped up to calmly dispatch, sealing the three points and the clean sheet.
This victory marks a significant momentum shift for Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's men. With Sundowns breathing down their necks, the Buccaneers have shown they can handle the pressure of the “high-intensity marathon” that is the 2026 title race.
