The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has successfully intercepted a significant consignment of suspected illicit drugs at the Port of Durban during a strategic pre-dawn operation conducted earlier today, 6 June 2026.
This enforcement action was the result of a precise customs risk assessment and rigorous cargo profiling that prompted officials to stop and inspect a shipment of heavy-duty excavation equipment arriving from South America.
Discovery and seizure process
During the inspection process, SARS detector dogs signaled the presence of suspicious items concealed within two of the excavators. Following this alert, the South African Police Service (SAPS) was called to secure the scene. Officers subsequently recovered approximately 90 large bricks of a substance that preliminary testing with a SARS mobile drug detection kit identified as cocaine.
The seized narcotics have been transferred to the SAPS for comprehensive forensic analysis and further criminal investigation to determine the exact weight, total value, origin, and intended final destination.
Strategic focus on combating illicit trade
SARS Commissioner Dr. Johnstone Makhubu emphasised that this interception is a direct reflection of the agency's strategic commitment to intensifying its crackdown on illicit trade and cross-border smuggling. Dr. Makhubu highlighted that intelligence-led operations are crucial for targeting high-risk shipments with precision, thereby helping to disrupt the criminal financial flows that threaten the domestic economy and undermine the efforts of compliant traders.
Impact of modernisation and technology
The success of this operation is also being attributed to the ongoing modernisation of SARS customs capabilities. Significant investments in non-intrusive inspection technology, advanced data-driven risk engines, and cargo profiling systems are allowing the agency to detect illicit goods more rapidly and accurately. These technological improvements enable SARS to maintain high security standards at key trade gateways without causing unnecessary delays to the flow of legitimate commercial activity.
Commitment to integrated border management
Looking ahead, SARS remains dedicated to fostering an integrated and responsive customs environment through continued cooperation with other law enforcement agencies and relevant port stakeholders.
Commissioner Makhubu commended the Customs team and the collaborating law enforcement partners for their vigilance and dedication in securing the nation's borders. As the investigation continues, SARS is calling upon all importers, exporters, and logistics operators to prioritise compliance as a vital component in maintaining the overall integrity and security of the country's trade systems.
