On Friday morning,police had a brutally confrontation with heavily armed cash-in-transit suspected robbers which were cornered in KwaMashu,Durban.

According to South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal,four suspects who were believed to have been involved in a spate of cash-in-transit robberies in the eThekwini District were fatally wounded in a shootout with police on Friday morning,06 October 2023.

In recent weeks,the cash-in-transit robberies in the Ethekwini Metro has been witnessed in the different locations and eye-witnesses took videos and share them on social media.

"A team comprised of various police disciplines and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation(the Hawks) followed up information after the recent cash-in-transit heists and intelligence led the law enforcement officers to a house at the corner of Queen Nandi Drive and Skhindi Road in KwaMashu which was believed to be a safe haven for the suspects.

"When police announced their presence,the suspects started firing gunshots at the police,leaving the men of law with no other alternative but to return fire and a shootout ensued.Four suspects sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the shootout.The suspects,two of whom are from Limpopo province,were found in possession of four firearms,an AK47 assault rifle,an R5 rifle and two pistol as well as numerous rounds of ammunition.

"A large quantity of explosives,several vehicle number plates,some of them are Limpopo registration plates as well as signal jammers were also found in possession of the suspects.A manhunt continues for more suspects.The Independent Police Investigative Directorate have been summoned for further investigations,"said police.

The SAPS also reported that police made an arrest in a different incident but still at the eThekwini area.

Police said the eThekwini District Trio Task Team,working together with the police in Berea,Crime Intelligence officers in Durban and private security companies have arrested four suspects,in less than 24 hours after they stabbed and killed a 66-year-old woman in her flat in Musgrave on Monday morning,02 October 2023.

Police added that the intelligence-led manhunt directed the law enforcement officers to KwaMakhutha where the four suspects were arrested.The vehicle which was used in the commission of the crime was also recovered and seized.Police also found blood-stained clothes in possession of the suspects.

Police concluded that the suspects aged between 21 and 36 years old,appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday,05 October 2023 and were remanded in custody.They will be in the dock again on 12 October 2023 in the Durban High Court where they are expected to submit a formal bid for bail.
