Danish Superliga powerhouse FC Copenhagen have officially secured the signing of South African international winger Thapelo Maseko on a four-year contract. The 22-year-old makes the permanent switch from Premier Soccer League giants Mamelodi Sundowns, marking a significant milestone in his professional career and realising his ambition of playing in Europe.

Rise to prominence and World Cup heroics

Maseko's stock rose considerably following a breakout period that included starring roles domestically and on the international stage. After shining for SuperSport United and subsequently moving to Mamelodi Sundowns – where he famously won the inaugural African Football League and claimed the tournament's best player and top scorer awards – he further cemented his reputation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Representing Bafana Bafana, Maseko scored a historic winning goal against South Korea to secure his nation's passage to the knockout stages, earning global attention and catching the eye of scouts worldwide.

The transfer and club ambitions

Following a brief loan spell in Cyprus with AEL Limassol and considerable interest from multiple continental suitors, FC Copenhagen successfully met the valuation to bring the explosive attacker to Denmark. Club officials expressed immense satisfaction at winning a competitive race for his signature.

Director of Football Kristjaan Speakman highlighted Maseko's versatility, noting his capability to operate on either flank, his blistering speed, and his knack for attacking open spaces.

Technical fit and looking ahead

Head coach Bo Svensson also welcomed the arrival of the dynamic winger, emphasising how his prowess in one-on-one situations and natural left-footed ability to cut inside will add a fresh, dangerous dimension to the team's frontline. Maseko himself has expressed immense pride over the transfer, revealing that former South African and Copenhagen fan favourite Sibusiso Zuma played a part in familiarising him with the prestige and stature of the Danish club.

Donning the number 12 jersey, Maseko arrives in the Danish capital ready to embrace a new challenge and eager to leave an immediate imprint as FC Copenhagen fights for domestic and European honours.
