In a clash billed as the “Title Decider,” Mamelodi Sundowns reignited their quest for a ninth consecutive league crown with a clinical 2-1 victory over log-leaders Orlando Pirates at a capacity FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.
A first-half brace from Colombian marksman Brayan Leon was enough to end the Buccaneers' impressive 14-game unbeaten run and trim the gap at the summit of the Betway Premiership to just three points.
Leon's quick-fire double stuns Soweto
Despite a frantic start from the hosts - which saw Ronwen Williams forced into two world-class saves to deny Deon Hotto and Yanela Mbuthuma - it was the Brazilians who showed their championship pedigree.
The deadlock was broken in the 37th minute when Nuno Santos delivered a pinpoint diagonal ball that found Leon. The striker controlled beautifully before firing low past Sipho Chaine. Just four minutes later, Leon doubled the lead, ghosting into the box to meet Aubrey Modiba's low cross and stabbing it home to leave the “Ghost” in stunned silence before the interval.
Second half surge
The Buccaneers emerged for the second half with renewed vigor and found a lifeline just two minutes after the restart. Patrick Maswanganyi unleashed a speculative effort from distance that took a heavy deflection off Teboho Mokoena, wrong-footing Williams to make it 2-1.
While Pirates pushed numbers forward in the closing stages, the Sundowns defence, marshaled by Khulumani Ndamane and Grant Kekana, held firm to secure a massive three points.
The road ahead
The result leaves Orlando Pirates at the top with 38 points, but Sundowns now sit dangerously close in second with 35 points and a crucial game in hand. The pendulum of momentum has officially swung back toward Pretoria as the season enters its final stretch.
