A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, 26 May 2026, in the Amaoti area of KwaZulu-Natal, resulting in the tragic death of one woman and leaving another with critical injuries.
The emergency response
According to reports from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), emergency services were alerted to the blaze at approximately 04:04. Upon their arrival, officers learned that local residents had heard screams coming from a one-room residence around 03:00. When neighbours investigated, they discovered the structure already engulfed in flames with two female occupants trapped inside.
Rescue efforts and casualties
In a courageous effort to save the trapped women, bystanders forced their way into the burning structure and successfully removed both victims before emergency personnel reached the scene. Despite these efforts, one woman was found to be unresponsive and was declared deceased by officials. The second woman had sustained severe, critical burn wounds and required immediate medical attention.
Preliminary investigation
Preliminary information provided by residents to RUSA officials suggests that the occupants may have been using a candle for light due to a power outage in the area. While this is the suspected cause, authorities have noted that the exact origin of the blaze has not yet been officially confirmed. The local Fire Department was dispatched to the scene shortly after the incident to extinguish the fire.
