A routine morning commute turned into a scene of distress today, Tuesday, 26 May 2026, when a scholar transport vehicle crashed directly into a home in Redcliffe, KwaZulu-Natal. The incident, which involved a white Toyota Hiace, occurred on Buffelsdraai Road and resulted in injuries to the nine children being transported to school.

Details of the collission

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received reports of the accident and arrived on the scene at approximately 07:47. Upon arrival, officers determined that the vehicle had veered off the roadway and plowed into a residential property located within an informal settlement. The force of the impact caused extensive destruction, shattering two windows, bending heavy-duty burglar bars, and demolishing a concrete boundary wall. The surrounding area was left covered  in vehicle parts and debris.

Status of passengers and driver

Preliminary reports indicate that nine children, between the ages of seven and nine, were occupants of the minibus at the time of the collision. Prior to the arrival of official first responders, the children were transported privately to the Redcliffe Clinic for urgent medical assessment.

The Toyota Hiace sustained catastrophic structural damage. The front section was crushed, the roof caved in, and the passenger side panels were completely torn off, with the driver's door detaching entirely during the impact. Authorities noted that the driver, who was reportedly injured in the crash, was not present at the scene when emergency personnel arrived. At this time, the exact circumstances that led to the vehicle veering off the road remain under investigation.
