A grim search for a missing person has reached a significant breakthrough following a high-risk recovery operation in the crocodile-infested waters of the Komati River.

The South African Police Service (SAPS), alongside a specialized multi-agency team, confirmed the recovery of human remains found within a crocodile on Sunday. The operation follows the disappearance of a local businessman whose Ford Ranger was found abandoned and trapped on a low-lying bridge in the river a week prior.

A daring aerial maneuver

The recovery was highlighted by the extraordinary bravery of Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter. Once the team identified a crocodile suspected of the attack, Captain Potgieter was hoisted from a SANParks helicopter directly into the hazardous river environment.

Under immense pressure and physical danger, he successfully secured the animal – which had been euthanized following official permission – allowing it to be airlifted and relocated for forensic examination.

Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, the Acting National Commissioner, lauded Captain Potgieter's actions as a standard-bearer for the service, noting that his willingness to place his life at risk reflects an unwavering commitment to serve and protect.

Forensic discovery and next steps

Upon examination of the crocodile's digestive system, human remains were successfully retrieved. The recovered body parts have now been submitted for urgent DNA analysis to formally confirm the identity of the deceased and provide definitive answers to the family.

Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, commended the team's persistence, stating that he gives honor to the dedicated members who put their lives in danger. He noted that the team worked tirelessly in difficult conditions and refused to give up, even when faced with a perilous situation.

A collaborative effort

The operation was a massive collaborative undertaking involving the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, NatJoint, SANParks, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Securecon, and the Port Management Committee.

This successful recovery marks a somber but vital step in a case that has gripped the Komatipoort community, highlighting the extreme lengths to which SAPS members go to ensure justice and closure.
