The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued an urgent warning to motorists following  a volatile protest and road closure on the R352 at Hlabekisa, near the iconic Bourke's Luck Potholes in Mpumalanga.

The situation escalated early Friday morning, 27 March 2026, when a group of more than 50 individuals barricaded the roadway, bringing traffic to a complete standstill in the area.

Ambush and hijacking

According to a media statement released by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner in Mpumalanga, the incident began around 05:00. SAPS received reports that a group had attacked a truck by throwing stones and shattering its windows, forcing the driver to stop.

The suspects then seized the vehicle and used it as a blockade. Four additional trucks were subsequently intercepted; their keys were confiscated, and their diesel was siphoned. Several truck drivers were reportedly assaulted during the confrontation.

Extortion of motorists

In addition to the blockades, the SAPS reported that the group used burning tires and corrugated roof sheeting to obstruct the road. Distressing reports indicate that some motorists attempting to navigate the area were stopped by the protesters and forced to pay money to be allowed to proceed.

While some vehicles are currently able to pass along the side of the road, police have urged the public to exercise “extreme caution” if they must travel through the vicinity.

Public response

Public Order Police (POP) units from Hazyview have been activated and are currently on-site working to stabilise the area. Law enforcement remains at the scene to manage traffic flow and prevent further violence.

“Community members are urged to remain calm and refrain from unlawful activities,” the SAPS stated.

A formal case of public violence has been opened, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the assaults, theft of diesel, and extortion.
