The South African Police Service (SAPS) recently executed an intensive operation that resulted in the arrest of five individuals suspected of operating a kidnapping syndicate within the province. This successful intervention highlights the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to combat organised crime in Gauteng.

Investigation and ransom sting

The operation was initiated following the kidnapping of a 47-year-old woman on 17 June 2026, who was taken while traveling to a gym in Edenvale. After her husband received a ransom demand for R2 million, law enforcement authorities mobilised a targeted intelligence operation.

By tracking suspect vehicles, the team was able to coordinate a sting at a pre-arranged ransom drop-off location on 23 June 2026. During this confrontation, officers apprehended two suspects arriving for the money and simultaneously arrested three additional associates located nearby, who were found in possession of multiple mobile devices.

Victim rescue and continued enforcement

The subsequent investigation led to the successful rescue of two victims, including a 44-year-old woman who had been kidnapped in Germiston on 19 June 2026. Both victims were treated for minor injuries before being reunited with their families.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the multidisciplinary team, which included SAPS units, the EMPD, and private security companies participating in the Eyes and Ears project, for their collaborative success. The five suspects, aged between 28 and 45, are scheduled to appear in court to face charges of kidnapping and extortion.
