A major manhunt is underway in Gauteng after a devastating mass shooting occurred at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland on the evening of Tuesday, 09 June 2026.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported that officers arrived at the scene around 23:10 following reports of an active shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately requested assistance from Emergency Medical Services.
Casualties and injuries
Tragically, the attack resulted in 12 fatalities. Authorities confirmed that eight adult males and three adult females were declared dead at the scene, while a twelfth male victim passed away later after being transported to a hospital. In addition to those who lost their lives, at least nine other individuals sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment at various medical facilities.
Details of the attack
According to preliminary reports, more than 10 suspects arrived in the vicinity of a Cleveland petrol station in a white Toyota Quantum. It is alleged that these individuals proceeded to enter the informal settlement through its two main entrances. The suspects moved through the area, firing indiscriminately at residents and community members in multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.
Ongoing investigation
In response to the tragedy, provincial and district detectives, supported by forensic experts and crime intelligence units, have been mobilised to conduct a thorough investigation and track down the perpetrators. While the motive for this brutal attack remains unknown, police have confirmed that no arrests have been made at this time.
