Four suspects fatally wounded in Yeoville shootout following high-speed chase

An early morning intelligence-led in Yeoville culminated in a fatal shootout on Wednesday, 25 March 2026, leaving four suspects dead and one injured.

The operation was sparked by intelligence regarding a group of suspects allegedly responsible for a series of armed robberies. These individuals were reportedly targeting travelers commuting from OR Tambo International Airport.

The operation

The mission was a collaborative effort involving several high-level units, including:

  • SAPS Counter Intelligence
  • SAPS Gauteng Tactical Response Team (TRT)
  • Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing
  • CAP Specialised Operations
  • Tracker Connect

At approximately 05:30, law enforcement identified the suspects traveling in a Suzuki Swift equipped with false registration plates. When officers attempted to intercept the vehicle in Yeoville, the suspects fled, leading to a high-speed chase through the area.

The Confrontation

The pursuit escalated into a violent confrontation when a shootout broke out between the suspects and the joint law enforcement team. During the exchange of gunfire, four suspects were fatally wounded. A fifth suspect sustained injuries and was arrested; he remains under police guard.

Following the shootout, authorities recovered three unlicensed firearms and ammunition from the scene.

Ongoing investigation

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened case of murder, attempted murder and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The Serious and Violent Crimes Investigations unit, in partnership with Crime Intelligence, is currently profiling the suspects to determine if they are linked to other crimes. Additionally, the recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing.

Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the spokesperson for the Provincial Commissioner's Office in Gauteng, confirmed the details of the incident.
