Mamelodi Sundowns took another massive step toward defending their Betway Premiership title with a commanding 3-0 victory over Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win moves the Brazilians to 64 points, extending their lead at the summit of the table and maintaining their ruthless momentum as the season nears its dramatic conclusion.
Match highlights: A three-pronged attack
Sundowns dictated the tempo from the first whistle, showcasing the tactical fluidity that has become their hallmark under the afternoon sun in Pretoria.
After waves of sustained pressure, Iqraam Rayners broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. Connecting with a precision cross from Teboho Mokoena, Rayners headed home his twelfth league goal of the season, further cementing his status as one of the league's most lethal finishers.
The dominance continued into the second half as Tashreeq Matthews doubled the lead in the 56th minute. Sundowns capitalized on a costly turnover in the Polokwane half, and Matthews showed great composure to slot the ball past the keeper, effectively silencing any hopes of a “Rise and Shine” comeback.
Substitute Nuno Santos delivered the final blow in the 85th minute, exploiting the gaps left by a tiring Polokwane defense to secure the three-goal margin.
Tactical control and performance
The statistics reflected a dominant Mamelodi Sundowns performance, as they maintained 68% of the ball possession. While Polokwane City relied on a deep-block defensive strategy, they struggled to contain the high-intensity pressing of the home side.
Sundowns controlled the rhythm from start to finish, rarely allowing their opponents a clear sight of goal.
What this means for the title race
This result is a clear statement of intent. With only a handful of matches remaining in the 2025-26 campaign, Sundowns have placed the burden of proof squarely on their challengers, Orlando Pirates.
Earlier in the day, the Sundowns youth side also secured a vital 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the DStv Diski Challenge, ensuring a successful “Double Sunday" for the Chloorkop-based outfit.
Now Sundowns turn their focus toward upcoming CAF Champions League commitments, they look virtually unstoppable on the domestic front.
