In a night of high drama at the Mbombela Stadium, TS Galaxy secured a stunning 3-2 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns, a result that has sent shockwaves through the Betway Premiership and effectively handed the title advantage to Orlando Pirates.

The “Rockets”, led by interim coach Bernard Parker, not only ended a dismal 13-match winless run but also secured their top-flight survival in emphatic style. For Mamelodi Sundowns, the defeat is catastrophic blow to their hopes of a ninth consecutive league title, as they now sit just three points ahead of Orlando Pirates, who have two games in hand and a superior goal difference.

A first-half rollercoaster

The match exploded into life early on. Despite a initial scare where Sundowns' Arthur Sales missed a one-on-one, it was the hosts who struck first. In the 7th minute, Victor Letsoalo coolly converted a penalty after Seluleko Mahlambi was brought down by Zuko Mdunyelwa.

The stadium erupted again in the 18th minute when Sedwyn George finished a clinical counter-attack to double the lead. Sundowns, looking uncharacteristically vulnerable in defense, clawed their way back through the brilliance of Brayan Leon. The striker netted a quickfire brace, starting with a powerful header from a Nuno Santos cross in the 38th minute, followed by a composed penalty in the 41st minute after a handball by Mpho Mvelase.

The teams went into the break level at 2-2, but the momentum seemed to have shifted toward the defending chmapions.

The decisive blow

The second half was barely 60 seconds old when Galaxy struck the winning blow. A defensive lapse allowed Siphesihle Maduna to break free; he unselfishly squared the ball for Mpho Mvelase, who tapped into an empty net to make amends for his earlier handball.

Sundowns threw everything at Galaxy in the closing stages, with Miguel Cardoso introducing fresh legs in Tashreeq Matthews and Miguel Reisinho. However, Galaxy goalkeeper Ira Tape produced a series of heroic saves to preserve the lead and secure a famous win.

The final scoreline saw TS Galaxy with 3 goals and Mamelodi Sundowns with 2. Scorers for the Rockets included Letsoalo, George, and Mvelase, while Leon provided both goals for the Brazilians.

What this means for the title race

The math is now simple yet daunting for Masandawana. They have finished their league campaign on 68 points.

The Pirates Factor: Orlando Pirates need just one win from their final two matches (against Durban City and Orbit College) to clinch the title on goal difference. Unless the Buccaneers suffer a historic collapse, Sundowns' eight-year reign as kings of South African football is likely at its end.

For TS Galaxy, the “bogey team” tag remains firmly attached. This victory marks their first under Bernard Parker and ensures the Rockets will remain in the Premiership for the 2026/27 season. Sundowns must now shift their focus to the CAF Champions League final against AS FAR, hoping to salvage their season with continental glory.
